Scared to Make Phone Calls? Ways Around It (and Through It)
Phone dread is common. Here's how to get everyday tasks done without a call, and how to make the calls you can't skip a little easier.
Scared to make phone calls? For most everyday tasks you can skip the call. For the calls you can’t skip, a short fill-in agenda makes them easier.
Fastest way:
- For everyday tasks, book or message online
- Have to call? Fill in the call agenda below
- Start with an easy call, like an automated line
- Book, message or email instead for everyday tasks
- Ask Reqly when a place has no online option
- Fill in a call agenda when you have to call
- Start with small, easy calls to build confidence
1. Everyday tasks: book, message or email instead
For routine errands, skipping the call is a fine choice, not a failure.
- Appointments: look for a Book or Schedule button on the business’s website or its Google Maps or Apple Maps listing. Doctor’s offices often use a patient portal (a secure site for messages and visits). See doctor appointments and haircuts without calling.
- Restaurants: most list a reservation link on their website or maps listing. See restaurant reservations without calling.
- Quotes: use a contact form or email, so you can describe the job once and attach photos. See repair quotes without calling.
- Quick questions: check the Contact page or website footer for a text line or web chat. See can you text a business?
2. When there’s no online option
Some places have no booking page or chat, and you just need a quick answer. Reqly asks the place for you and texts you back the live answer, so you don’t have to make the call. Here’s what that looks like:
Can you make a custom chocolate birthday cake for Saturday?
Later
Yes, if you order by Thursday. Stop by or reply with the name and message you want on the cake.

To start, share a place to Reqly from Apple Maps, Google Maps or Yelp, or type your question. For emergencies, call 911.
3. Have to call? Fill this in first
A few bullet points work better than a word-for-word script. A script can throw you off when the other person says something you didn’t expect.
Copy this into your notes app before you dial:
WHO I'M CALLING: ____________________
WHY (one sentence): "Hi, I'm calling to ____________________."
MY DETAILS (if they ask):
- Name: ____________
- Account or order number: ____________
- Best callback number: ____________
WHAT I NEED TO FIND OUT:
1. ____________________
2. ____________________
IF THEY ASK SOMETHING I DON'T KNOW:
"I'm not sure, can I check and get back to you?"
IF I GET VOICEMAIL:
"Hi, this is ______, calling about ______. Please call or text me at ______. Thanks."
BEFORE I HANG UP:
- Repeat back the date, time or price
- Ask: "Is there anything else I need to bring or do?"
It has a line ready for voicemail and for “I don’t know.” Those are two moments people often dread.
Pick a time when you have some energy and privacy. Then call soon after you decide, so the dread doesn’t have hours to build.
Afterward, go easy on yourself. Small slips are normal, and other people rarely notice them as much as we think. Jot down what went well, not just what didn’t.
4. Scared to make phone calls? Start small
Phone dread, sometimes called telephobia (a fear of phone calls), is common. It’s often fear of being judged, not of the phone. Avoiding every call can make the next one feel bigger.
Start small: an automated line, then a friend, then one yes/no question to a shop. When that feels okay, try a short booking with your agenda in hand.
Go at your own pace. It’s fine to stay on one step for a while.
If it’s affecting your work or life
If fear of calls gets in the way of work, health care or relationships, talk to a doctor or therapist. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT, a talk therapy for anxious thoughts) is a well-supported approach. You don’t have to work through it alone.

Frequently asked questions
Is it normal to be scared of making phone calls?
Yes. Phone anxiety is very common, especially among younger adults. Many people find calls harder than face-to-face talks because there are no visual cues.
What is telephobia?
Telephobia is a fear or strong reluctance to make or take phone calls. It usually comes from worry about being judged or saying the wrong thing, not from the phone itself.
Should I just avoid phone calls completely?
Using online booking, chat or text for routine tasks is perfectly reasonable. Avoiding every call can make the important ones feel harder, so small practice calls help too.
Should I write a full script before a phone call?
A short list of bullet points usually works better. A word-for-word script can throw you off when the other person says something unexpected.
Can Reqly help with phone anxiety?
Reqly is a practical tool for everyday questions, not a treatment for anxiety. It is not for emergencies, and for medical or account matters a business may need to verify you directly.
