How to Book a Doctor Appointment Without Calling

Every way to get on a doctor's or dentist's schedule online, and what to do when a small practice only takes calls.

To book a doctor appointment without calling, use your clinic’s patient portal if you’re already a patient. If you need a new doctor, use Zocdoc or the practice’s website.

Fastest way:

  1. Open your patient portal app, like MyChart.
  2. Find Schedule an Appointment (often under Visits).
  3. No portal? Search the doctor on Zocdoc and book.
  4. Emergency? Call 911.

Pick your route:

1. Book a doctor appointment without calling in your portal

If you’ve been seen at a clinic or hospital system, you likely have a portal account. MyChart is the most common one in the US. Many clinics offer self-scheduling (booking a visit yourself, online) in it.

  1. Log in to the portal app or website.
  2. Tap Schedule an Appointment (sometimes under Visits or Appointments).
  3. Pick the reason for the visit and the provider.
  4. Choose a time and confirm.

Don’t see the option? Each clinic decides which visits you can book yourself. Use the portal’s message feature to ask the office for a slot instead.

2. Need a new doctor? Use Zocdoc

Zocdoc is free for patients. It shows open times and lets you book in a few taps.

  1. Enter the specialty (primary care, dentist, dermatologist) and your ZIP code.
  2. Pick your insurer and the exact plan name from your card.
  3. Compare open times, read reviews and tap Book.
  4. Fill out any intake forms (new-patient paperwork) from the confirmation email.

Use the full plan name from your card, not just the insurer’s name. A doctor can be in-network (your plan covers them) for one plan and not another from the same insurer.

New patient? Have these ready

  • Insurance card, front and back
  • Photo ID
  • List of medications and allergies
  • Previous doctor’s name, so the office can request records
  • Preferred pharmacy

3. Book on the practice’s website

Many practices, especially dentists, have a Book online or Request an appointment button. Some show live times. Others are request forms, so give two or three time windows to get a confirmation in one reply.

4. Tap Book on Google

Search the practice on Google or Google Maps and look for a Book button. It uses Reserve with Google and is more common at dentists, chiropractors and vets than hospital doctors.

5. Book a video visit

For many common issues, telehealth (a video visit) is the quickest way to be seen. Check your portal or your insurer’s app for video visits. A clinician will tell you if you need to come in.

6. When there’s no online option

Small offices often take requests only by phone. Many still answer email, so start there.

Email to request an appointment:

Subject: New patient appointment request

Hi, I'd like to book a new patient appointment with any available provider.
My insurance is [insurer and plan name from your card].
I'm available [two or three time windows].
Please reply with an open time, and let me know if there are forms to fill out first.
Thank you,

Frequently asked questions

Can I book a doctor appointment online as a new patient?

Often, yes. Zocdoc and many practice websites let new patients book directly, but some portals only let existing patients schedule.

Why can't I see a scheduling option in MyChart?

Each clinic decides which visit types you can book yourself. If the option is missing, send the office a message in the portal instead.

Is Zocdoc free to use?

Yes. Zocdoc says it does not charge patients to book, cancel or reschedule. Your normal copay or visit cost still applies.

Can Reqly book a medical appointment for me?

Reqly can find out if there's an opening, whether they take your plan and how to get on the schedule. A medical office may need to verify your identity with you directly before it books you.

What if I need care right now?

If it's an emergency, call 911. Reqly is not for emergencies. For care that can't wait but isn't an emergency, check your portal or insurer's site for same-day and video visits.
