How to Get Mechanic and Plumber Quotes Without Calling
Send one clear request to several shops, compare the answers side by side, and only talk once you've picked a winner.
You can get a mechanic quote online, or a plumber quote, without calling. Send one request to three shops and compare their written replies.
Fastest way:
- Check a fair price on RepairPal (cars).
- Send one request on Yelp Request a Quote or Thumbtack.
- Compare the written replies side by side.
Smell gas? Leave the building, then call 911 or your gas utility from outside.
- Check a fair price on RepairPal for car repairs
- Ask several shops on Yelp for mechanics or plumbers
- Find a plumber on Thumbtack for home repairs
- Use the shop’s website if it has a form or booking page
- Let Google ask for prices where it’s offered
- Have someone ask for you when shops only answer the phone
1. Check a fair price on RepairPal
RepairPal’s Fair Price Estimator is free. It gives a price range for hundreds of repairs on most cars built since 1990. The range is adjusted for your engine, drivetrain (the parts that send power to the wheels) and ZIP code.
- Open the Fair Price Estimator.
- Enter your car, the repair and your ZIP.
- Keep the range handy as quotes come in.
RepairPal-certified shops must offer at least a 12-month/12,000-mile warranty.
2. Get a mechanic or plumber quote online with Yelp
- Open a shop’s Yelp page and tap Request a Quote.
- Describe the job once (paste a template from Copy-paste quote requests below).
- Send it to the similar businesses Yelp suggests.
Yelp shows how fast each business usually responds, so favor the quick ones. Replies arrive as Yelp messages.
3. Find a plumber on Thumbtack
Smell gas? Leave the building, then call 911 or your gas utility from outside.
- On Thumbtack, enter your ZIP and the job, like “water heater replacement.”
- Answer a few questions.
- Compare local pros, reviews and cost estimates, then message them in the app.
Have a home inspection report? Thumbtack’s home repair estimates tool turns it into cost estimates.
4. Use the shop’s website
Many shops have an estimate form, online booking or a chat box. Dealership service departments almost always book online. More channels are in can you text a business.
5. Let Google ask for prices
Google can call nearby shops and ask prices for you. Look for Have AI check pricing in Search (US, signed in, 18+).
It won’t book, and it may share your name.
6. When there’s no online option
Many good local shops only answer the phone. Reqly asks the shops for you and texts you back their answers. It can ask several at once, which is what you want for quotes. Here’s what that looks like:
My brakes are squeaking. Can you look at them this week?
Later
Yes, Thursday morning works. We'll check the pads and rotors and give you a written quote first.

To start, share a place to Reqly from Apple Maps, Google Maps or Yelp, or type your question.
Copy-paste quote requests
Paste these into Yelp, Thumbtack, a shop’s form or an email. Vague requests get “bring it in.” Details, photos and your ZIP get a real number. A diagnostic fee is a charge to find the problem.
For a mechanic:
Subject: Quote request: [repair] on a [year make model]
Hi, I'd like a quote for a repair.
Car: [year make model], [engine], [miles] miles.
Problem: [what happens, when, and for how long].
A dashboard photo is attached.
I'm in [ZIP code] and could drop it off [days and times].
Could you quote parts, labor and any diagnostic fee?
Is that fee credited if I go ahead, and what's the warranty?
Thanks, [name]
For a plumber:
Subject: Quote request: [the problem]
Hi, I'd like a quote for a repair.
What: [fixture or appliance, size, age].
Problem: [what's happening and where].
Photos of the problem and model label are attached.
I'm in [ZIP code] and free [days and times].
Could you quote parts, labor and any trip fee?
What warranty do you give on parts and labor?
Thanks, [name]
How to compare repair quotes
Parts are OEM (made by the carmaker) or aftermarket (other brands).
| What to compare | Shop A | Shop B | Shop C |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total price (parts + labor) | |||
| Diagnostic or trip fee | |||
| Is that fee credited if you go ahead? | |||
| Parts type (OEM, aftermarket, used) | |||
| Warranty on parts and labor | |||
| Earliest appointment | |||
| Reviews and certifications |
If one quote is far below the rest, ask why. It might be cheaper parts, a skipped step, or a fee that shows up later.
Red flags to watch for
- No written estimate. Get the quote by message or email before work starts.
- Pressure to decide today, especially scare talk about safety you can’t see.
- A price that changes in the bay without a clear reason.
- Cash only, no receipt.
- A large deposit before any work or parts.
- No warranty, or one they won’t put in writing.

Frequently asked questions
Can a mechanic give an accurate quote without seeing the car?
For routine jobs like brakes or a battery, a shop can usually quote from the year, make, model and engine. For a mystery noise or warning light, expect a diagnostic fee and a firm quote only after inspection.
Is it free to request quotes on Yelp or Thumbtack?
Sending a request is free for customers on both. You pay the business only if you hire them.
How many repair quotes should I get?
Two or three is usually enough to spot an outlier. For big jobs like a water heater replacement, a third quote is worth the extra day.
Should I pick the cheapest quote?
Not automatically. Compare parts, warranty and what's included first, since a low quote that adds fees later can cost more.
What if the repair is an emergency?
Skip quote shopping. If you smell gas, leave the building and call 911 or your gas utility from outside. Reqly is not for emergencies, and any early price is an estimate until a shop sees the job.
